@Paul - Great point about SEO and the potential for disabling comments as a strategy for encouraging incoming links. I hadn't considered that and it certainly makes sense. Please let us know how your experiment goes and what the response is to you turning off your comment functionality.

I think its also worth pointing out that a no comments policy can actually positively improve SEO, as it forces the reader to respond (and link) elsewhere. Knowing what type of article this will benefit, is a an artform in itself, but typically the sort of commentary we've seen from Gruber recently - its pretty obvious as to the response from others around the web. I'm actually considering turning off comments altogether on my own site (for say a month) - and watching to see if either social interaction or backlinks result.

While risking being a spammer myself, I'm posting only because the product which I'm about to peddle is a brand new commenting platform that aims to solve a lot of the issues addressed in this post. The product is called Livefyre - http://livefyre.com - and we just announced our funding and launch of our private beta today: http://techcrunch.com/2010/07/06/livefyre-realtime-comments/

The entire platform was built on the principle of accountability. ie. You can post anonymously if you want, but user ratings against the comment still effect your overall user rating. We also allow bloggers to pre-filter the quality of the commenters themselves by setting reputation standards for their content.

It's innovative on a lot of levels, and we'd love for you guys and your readers to sign up for the private beta and give it a go in the near future.

Many thanks for this very timely post (for me, anyways). I'm a new blogger, and only in the last week have I had to wake up to the reality of spam. The first one was extremely unpleasant (russian porn); now it's ringtones.

I would hate to ask commenters to wait for moderation, so many thanks for suggesting some of the extra security measures. I will definitely look into them. Until then, I'm checking my blog comments 4 times a day. Not perfect, but at least I can quickly disapprove.

Look forward to seeing how others handle this issue.
